Yesterday was Sophie's actual due date. She now weighs 7.5 pounds and is 20.5 inches long. She has been gaining a pound and growing an inch about every 2 weeks. Now that she has reached her original due date-(40 weeks gestation) we can now start looking at milestones for the 1st week of birth. We of course think that she is quite advanced as she has already mastered those. She has officially out grown all of her preemie clothes and has moved into the newborn section. However, she seems to have the Johnson trait of a long torso, as the newborn onesies are almost too short.

Let's go for a walk!
It was a beautiful, wonderful weekend in the sun! We enjoyed getting outside, trying to do yard work and going for walks. Sophie enjoyed the walk in the nice weather. She kicked off her blanket and kicked her little toes in the breeze, as if saying, "faster, mommy, faster!" Hopefully the warm weather is a sign of summer- we're all ready for a little sun!

4 hours!
As you can see, Sophie was surprised to learn that she went 4 hours between feedings in the night. I'm sure many of you are thinking, oh how wonderful- Ashley got more sleep! But you forget that I am a paranoid new mother, and I kept getting up to check on her every 10 minutes. If she sleeps longer again tonight, I will not panic and will enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother's Day! We had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend, where we spent time at the cabin with family. Sophie got to meet her Crazy Uncle Mac, Aunt Emily and their kids. We had a great time as the weather warmed up- in the 60's! and it felt as if summer was on the way. Sophie, in particular, had an especially good time as there were lots of people willing to hold and snuggle with her. This equates to a perfect day in Sophie's world.
A little note about the above picture- it's not particularly good of either of us, but it has a story behind it. Sophie has a routine, diaper change then eat. We do not stray from this routine. On Mother's Day we thought that we would change her before heading out to the cabin- it was about an hour and a half before she was supposed to eat, and we foolishly figured that she would go back to sleep after we changed her. Well, Sophie woke up after being changed and proceeded to tell us that she was ready to eat. We tried to distract her by giving her a pacifier- which only made her mad, all that sucking and no food-but we held firm to the fact that it was not time to eat yet. As you can see from the above picture, Sophie pulled out all her baby tricks and proceeded to chew on her little hand. We fed her after that. Yes, she is training us quite well.

Sophie is 4 weeks old today!
Yes indeed, our little Sophie is 4 weeks old today! Here are some things that we have learned about her so far:
1. Sophie likes to be held at all times. She does not like her crib or bassinet and will protest within minutes of being placed inside. This makes it extremely difficult to get sleep, so Carl and I have taken to sleeping with Sophie on our chests. I'm quite sure that all the baby books would say to Never do this, however I am willing to bet that they've never had a sleep nazi as a baby.
3. Sophie likes her baths! Although you can not tell in this picture, she has closed her eyes and stretched out her little legs, as if to say," All right folks, hit the jets. Let's get this hot tub rolling!"Carl used to tease me, but I swore that before she was born if she was particularly active or had the hiccups for a long period of time, if I took a hot shower she would relax. Hmm, it appears that I was right...

2. Sophie has a favorite position-on your chest with her head tucked under your chin. Even if your prop her up onto your shoulder, she will wiggle and squirm around until her head is firmly under your chin. Now-I've done some thinking as to why she might like this position, and the only thing I can think of is that she spent the last 5 months in my tummy with her head under my ribs, and this position is comforting to her.

4. Eating is a very serious activity. Here Carl is trying to convince Sophie that even though she is awake, she does not need to be eating. This only worked for a few minutes, before she remembered that she had not eaten for 90 whole minutes.
We have greatly enjoyed getting to know our little Sophie and can not wait to see what the next 4 weeks bring. Hopefully more sleep.
